1. any one of various plants whose flowers or leaves turn so as to follow the sun, especially the heliotrope and (formerly) the sunflower.
2. an annual herb of the spurge family, growing in the Mediterranean region, formerly valued for the blue dyestuff which it yields.
3. a deep-purple dye obtained from this plant.
